Modern Marmaris stands on the site of the ancient city of Physkos (Phykos). Physkos was an important port city of the ancient region of Caria, serving as a gateway between the Mediterranean and the inner parts of Anatolia.
Location and Exploration
The ruins of Physkos are located on Asar Hill (Asartepe), situated in the northern part of Marmaris. Unlike other famous ancient cities in Turkey, Physkos has not been heavily restored, offering an adventurous, raw archaeological exploration experience for hikers and history buffs.
Historical Significance
Physkos was first mentioned in the 5th century BC by the famous historian Herodotus. It was a key naval base for the Carians and later fell under the control of the Persians, Alexander the Great, and the Roman Empire. Today, you can see remnants of the ancient city walls, foundations of structures, and rock tombs scattered among the pine trees on the hill.
