Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai: Ottoman Roadside Heritage

Located in the narrow, winding streets of Marmaris Old Town, just below the castle entrance, the Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai is an outstanding example of Ottoman-era military and commercial architecture.

Origin and Purpose

The Caravanserai was constructed in 1545 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He dedicated the building to his mother, Valide Hafsa Sultan. Originally, it served as a roadside inn and barracks for the Ottoman soldiers during the Rhodes campaign, providing accommodation, food, and shelter for travelers, soldiers, and their horses.

Architecture and Modern Use

The building features a large central courtyard surrounded by rooms with arched brick ceilings. Today, this historic monument has been carefully preserved and is used as a vibrant marketplace. Visitors can explore traditional souvenir shops, carpet boutiques, and cozy cafes serving Turkish coffee within its historic stone walls.
