Perched on a steep hill overlooking the beautiful bay of Amos, between Turunc and Kumlubük, lies the archaeological site of Amos Ancient City. It is one of the few ancient cities where ruins are coupled with an breathtaking, uninterrupted panoramic view of the sea.
Historical Overview
Amos was a small but significant settlement belonging to the Rhodian Peraia (territories controlled by the island of Rhodes on the Anatolian mainland). It flourished during the Hellenistic period. "Amos" meant "the temple of the mother goddess" in the ancient Carian dialect.
Key Ruins to See
While the site requires a short, moderately steep walk up the hill, the rewards are immense. The main ruins include:
- The Theater: A small Hellenistic theater with three sitting sections and parts of the stage building still visible.
- The Temple Foundations: Located at the highest point of the hill, offering an incredible vantage point.
- City Walls and Towers: Defensive structures constructed to protect the city from sea raids.
